Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well: One Fee, Two Sites

Montezuma Castle is a five-storey Sinagua cliff dwelling built into a limestone alcove above Beaver Creek, about 50 miles and an hour from Prescott. It is one of the best-preserved dwellings of its kind in the country, it takes an hour to see, and the ticket buys more than most visitors use.

This is the part worth knowing before you pay. The $10 admission is valid for seven days and it works at Tuzigoot National Monument as well, a hilltop pueblo near Clarkdale about half an hour away. An annual pass for both is $35.

So if you are going to Cottonwood and Old Town or the Verde Canyon Railroad on the same trip or later in the week, one ticket covers Tuzigoot too. Buy it once and keep it.

Montezuma Well is the one people miss

The Well is a detached unit of the same monument eleven miles up the road, and it is free. It is a limestone sinkhole 368 feet across, fed by underground springs that push out roughly 1.4 million gallons a day at a temperature that barely moves with the season, with its own cliff dwellings around the rim and an irrigation ditch the Sinagua cut that still runs.

The water chemistry is strange enough that at least five species live in the Well and nowhere else on earth, which is more endemic species than any other spring in the southwestern United States. It is quieter than the Castle, it costs nothing, and a good number of people drive past the turning without knowing it is there.

Practical notes

You cannot go inside the Castle. Entry has been closed since 1951 to keep the structure standing. You look up at it from the paved loop below. Visitors who arrive expecting to climb into it are the ones who leave disappointed, and that is purely an expectations problem.

The main trail is fully accessible. A third of a mile, paved, no steps. The Well has stairs down toward the water.

Opening hours run roughly 9am to 4:45pm, closed Thanksgiving, 25 December and 1 January. Check the National Park Service site before a long drive, since hours shift seasonally.

It is hot down there. Camp Verde sits around 3,100 feet, some 3,300 feet lower than Groom Creek, so a pleasant 80 degrees at the cabin is mid-90s at the Castle in summer. Go in the morning.
