Arizona's Mountain Towns, Compared
Prescott, Flagstaff, Sedona, Payson, Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside compared on elevation, size, drive time from Phoenix, summer temperatures and what each is actually for.

Arizona has six mountain towns people actually consider for a summer trip, and they are further apart in character than a map suggests. Two thousand six hundred feet separates the highest from the lowest, which is roughly nine degrees.

The elevation point, said plainly
Every one of these towns is marketed as an escape from the heat, and they are not equally good at it. Air cools by about 3.5°F for every 1,000 feet, so:
- Flagstaff runs about 9°F cooler than Prescott and about 26°F cooler than Phoenix.
- Sedona runs about 4°F warmer than Prescott, and about 10°F cooler than Phoenix. In July that is a 95-degree afternoon.
- Groom Creek, six miles south of Prescott at about 6,400 feet, runs 4 to 5°F cooler than Prescott itself, which puts it within about four degrees of Flagstaff.

Picking one
Flagstaff if you want genuine alpine, snow in winter, or a Grand Canyon base. It is a university town, so it is livelier and younger, and it is the only one here where summer nights are properly cold. It is also the most expensive and the busiest.
Prescott if you want a town rather than a basecamp. Courthouse Plaza, Whiskey Row, five lakes, trailheads in three directions, and a historic downtown you can walk in an evening. Sedona for the scenery, and go in spring or autumn. It is spectacular, it is crowded, it is expensive, and in July it is hot. Treat it as a day trip from Prescott, 58 miles and about an hour and a half, rather than a summer base. See Prescott vs Sedona.
Payson if the drive is the deciding factor. Ninety minutes from Phoenix on the Beeline, under the Mogollon Rim, with good creek swimming nearby. It is the Valley’s default weekend escape, which means it fills up.
Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside if you want the White Mountains and do not mind three hours each way. Cooler, quieter, lake country, and a genuinely different part of the state. Not a weekend trip from Phoenix unless you leave early.
The honest summary
If your only criterion is temperature, go to Flagstaff or the White Mountains. If you want a cool place with something to do in it that is still two hours from Phoenix, that is Prescott, and staying up in the pines south of town gets you most of Flagstaff’s climate with Prescott’s town attached.

Flagstaff, at about 6,900 feet, and Pinetop-Lakeside at about 6,800. Prescott is warmer than both at roughly 5,350 feet, though cabins south of town in Groom Creek sit near 6,400 and close most of the gap. Sedona at about 4,300 feet is the warmest on this list and is not a heat escape.
Is Prescott or Flagstaff better to visit?
Flagstaff is higher, colder, bigger and the base for the Grand Canyon. Prescott is warmer, smaller, cheaper, has a real historic town square and is 15 minutes closer to Phoenix. For a two-night trip built around a walkable downtown and lakes, Prescott. For snow, altitude and the Canyon, Flagstaff.
Is Sedona cooler than Phoenix?
Yes, but only by about 10 degrees. Sedona sits at roughly 4,300 feet, which is a lot lower than the other towns here, so summer afternoons still reach the mid-90s. People who go to Sedona in July expecting Flagstaff weather are disappointed.
What is the closest mountain town to Phoenix?
Payson, about 90 minutes up the Beeline Highway at roughly 5,000 feet. It is the shortest escape from the Valley, which also makes it the busiest on a summer weekend. Prescott is about two hours and 300 feet higher.
Which Arizona mountain town has the best downtown?
Prescott, and it is not close. Courthouse Plaza is a genuine public square with a 1916 courthouse at its centre, Whiskey Row facing it, and more than 700 buildings on the National Register in the surrounding blocks. Flagstaff has a good historic downtown too, but Prescott is built around its square rather than a road.
