Cabin or Hotel in Prescott: An Honest Comparison

There is no universal answer to this, and anybody who tells you a cabin is always better is selling cabins. We rent two of them, and this is still the honest version.

The drive is the real decision

Groom Creek is about seven miles from Courthouse Plaza, fifteen to twenty minutes up Senator Highway on a paved road. That is not far and it is not nothing.

It means that if you go out to eat on Whiskey Row, somebody drives back afterwards. For a couple planning two nights of restaurants and bars, a hotel on the square is straightforwardly the better answer, and we would rather you had a good trip than a booking with us.

For a family cooking breakfast, a group splitting the cost, or anybody staying more than about three nights, the drive stops mattering and everything else starts to.

The cost comparison people get wrong

Comparing one cabin night against one hotel room night usually makes the cabin look expensive. That is the wrong comparison for a group. Six people in a cabin against three hotel rooms is a different sum, and the kitchen changes it again: breakfast and a couple of dinners cooked rather than bought is real money over a week.

What you actually get for the drive

Temperature. Groom Creek sits about 1,000 feet above town, which is worth four to five degrees year round. In July that is the difference between sitting outside in the evening and not.

Dark. No street lighting, which is why the stargazing is worth staying up for.

Trees and quiet. The Groom Creek Loop starts up the road rather than across town.

Space. A kitchen, a deck, rooms that are not off a corridor.

Who should book the hotel

Two people, two nights, here for the town, no car or reluctant to drive at night. That is a genuinely better hotel trip and there is no point pretending otherwise.

Who should book the cabin

Families, groups, anybody staying four nights or more, anybody who wants to cook, and anybody whose reason for coming to Prescott in the first place was that it is in the pines. If that is you, the comparison of every area around town is in where to stay near Prescott.
