Payson and Prescott get compared because they are the two closest mountain escapes from Phoenix, and they are not much alike. One is nearer. The other is bigger, higher and has more to do once you arrive.

The half hour is why Payson is busy
Payson is about ninety minutes from central Phoenix and Prescott is about two hours. On a summer Saturday that half hour matters enormously, and Payson absorbs a lot of Valley traffic for its size. It can feel busier than a town of 16,000 has any right to.
Prescott is far enough that the day-trip crowd thins and most visitors are staying at least a night. If the point of the trip is to get away from people, the extra thirty minutes buys you something real.
Elevation, and what it is worth
Prescott is roughly 350 feet above Payson, which is not much. The gap widens if you stay above town: Groom Creek is around 6,400 feet, about 1,400 above Payson, and that is worth four to five degrees on a summer night.
Neither town is Flagstaff. If you want genuinely cold summer nights, that is 7,000 feet and a different trip. All six mountain towns are compared in Arizona’s mountain towns.
What each is for
Payson is a gateway. The Mogollon Rim is immediately north, the Tonto National Forest lakes are close, and the town is somewhere to sleep and buy supplies rather than somewhere to spend an afternoon. If you are fishing, camping or driving the Rim road, it is well placed.
Prescott is a destination in itself. There is a historic downtown square, Whiskey Row, a rodeo with a serious claim to being the world’s oldest, five lakes within twenty minutes and ten trails worth walking. You can spend four days here without driving more than fifteen miles.
They are not near each other
Ninety-nine miles and two hours apart, with no direct road. People look at a map, see two towns in the same band of high country, and assume a quick hop. It is not. Pick one for the trip rather than planning to see both.
