What a Prescott Trip Actually Costs
The fees nobody puts in one place: lake and trailhead parking, camping, fishing licences, the booking-site markup, and a worked three-night budget for four people.

Prescott is inexpensive once you are here. Trails are free, the plaza is free, and a lake costs $5 a carload. Lodging is essentially the entire budget, and the fees around the edges are small but oddly hard to find in one place.
So here they are.

The cost nobody shows you until checkout
The booking-site guest service fee, typically 12 to 15% of the nightly total. It is not in the price you see in search results. It appears at the final screen, after you have chosen.
On a three-night stay at $219 a night, that is roughly $80 to $100 added at the end. It is the single largest avoidable line in a Prescott trip budget, and the only way around it is booking direct with whoever owns the place.
We are obviously not neutral on this, since we rent direct. The number is the number regardless of who tells you.
A worked example
Four people, three nights, cooking half their meals. Our actual published rates, which is the part of this we can state with authority.

A refundable $500 damage deposit is held and returned within 14 days of check-out, so it affects your card limit rather than your budget.
The same three nights at the Groom Creek Getaway, which sleeps six, comes to $832 before food. Split six ways that is a different number again, which is the whole economic case for a cabin: it only makes sense once you are dividing it.
Where the calendar hurts
Two windows cost more everywhere in town and sell out months ahead:
- Rodeo week, 29 June to 5 July in 2026, when the World’s Oldest Rodeo fills the whole area.
- December, when Prescott trades as Arizona’s Christmas City from the Courthouse Lighting on 5 December onward.
Our own rates go to $239 and $289 in those windows and we are at the modest end. If your dates are flexible, September and October are the value months: the weather is better than August, the crowds have gone, and nothing is priced for a festival. See the month-by-month breakdown.
How to spend less
- Come midweek, and put your lake day on a Wednesday when parking is free at both the city and forest sites.
- Book direct with whoever owns the property and skip the 12 to 15%.
- Cook two or three meals. This is the actual argument for a cabin over a hotel room, more than the space is. Two dinners out instead of six changes the trip cost more than the nightly rate does.
- Buy a forest pass if you are here four days or more, or if you will be back.

What is genuinely free
Every trail in the hiking guide once you have parked, and the Groom Creek Loop trailhead has no fee at all. Courthouse Plaza, including the live music that turns up on the bandstand most summer weekends. Window-shopping Whiskey Row. The Christmas Courthouse Lighting and the parade. The drive over Mingus Mountain to Jerome, which is the best hour in the area and costs a tank of fuel.
Where to stay
Both of our cabins book direct with no service fee added at checkout, and both have a full kitchen and a washer and dryer, which is where the real saving on a longer stay comes from. Check the calendar.
