Driving an EV to Prescott: The Elevation Costs You Range
Phoenix to Groom Creek is a 5,300-foot climb, and it costs more battery than the mileage suggests. What to expect on the way up, what you get back coming down, and how to plan charging.

Driving an EV up here is easy. Planning it as though it were 100 flat miles is where people get caught, because the drive from Phoenix to Groom Creek climbs more than a vertical mile and the battery notices.

That is a hundred miles of road and over 5,000 feet of lift. Physics does not care about the distance, it cares about the mass you raised, and lifting a two-tonne car a mile straight up costs real energy.
What this means in practice
Leave Phoenix with more than you think you need. The range estimate your car shows at the bottom of the hill is based on recent driving, which was flat. It will fall faster than the miles do. Nothing dramatic happens, but the buffer you thought you had shrinks.
You get a lot of it back coming down. This is the pleasant half. The descent toward Phoenix is long and steady, regenerative braking does most of the work, and it is normal to reach the valley having spent much less than the distance suggests. Plan the round trip as a whole rather than each leg on its own.
Cold weather compounds it. A winter trip is a climb and a cold battery at the same time. Winter range in the high country is lower than the summer figure for the same route.
Charging
Prescott has public charging including fast chargers, and there is more of it each year. Individual sites change hands and go out of service, so check a live map such as PlugShare, or your own car’s network app, for the week you are travelling rather than relying on a list written months earlier. That is the honest answer, and any page that gives you a fixed list of chargers will be wrong before long.
Do not assume charging at the cabin. If it matters to your trip, ask before you book. The practical pattern is to arrive with enough for local driving and top up in town, which is fifteen minutes down the hill from Groom Creek.
Where you should not take an EV
The forest roads. The route toward Crown King is dirt, rock and water crossings for 37 miles with no charging, no service and often no phone signal. That is not an EV problem specifically, it is a ground-clearance problem, but the combination of the two is a bad place to discover either.
Ordinary day trips are fine. Jerome, Cottonwood, Sedona and Montezuma Castle are all paved and all comfortably inside a normal round trip from Prescott, with the same climb-and-recover pattern on the way back.

Comfortably, in any modern EV. It is about 100 miles. The thing to plan for is the climb: you gain over 4,000 feet to Prescott and 5,300 to Groom Creek, and that uses noticeably more energy than 100 flat miles would.

Expect the trip to consume meaningfully more than the mileage implies, because you are lifting the car more than a vertical mile. Plan on arriving with less buffer than your car predicted when you set off, and treat the estimate at the bottom of the hill as optimistic.
