Prescott Altitude: What 5,350 Feet Actually Does to You
Prescott sits around 5,350 feet and Groom Creek at 6,400. What that means for sleep, alcohol, hydration and exertion in the first two days, and who should take it seriously.
September 6, 2026 · The Owners
Prescott sits at about 5,350 feet. Groom Creek, seven miles south, is around 6,400. Neither is high enough to be dangerous for a healthy person, and both are high enough that people arriving from sea level notice something is different by the first evening without quite working out what.
The numbers
| Place | Elevation |
|---|---|
| Phoenix | about 1,100 ft |
| Prescott | about 5,350 ft |
| Groom Creek | about 6,400 ft |
| Spruce Mountain lookout | about 7,700 ft |
| Flagstaff | about 6,900 ft |
| Usual altitude-sickness threshold | around 8,000 ft |
What you will actually notice
The first night’s sleep is worse. This is the most common one and it surprises people who have no other symptoms. Breathing patterns change at altitude and the first night is often broken. The second is usually normal.
You get winded sooner. A climb that would be nothing at home is noticeably harder on day one. This is not fitness deserting you, and it passes.
You dehydrate quickly. The air here is very dry, and you lose water through breathing without feeling like you are sweating. Most headaches blamed on altitude are dehydration.
Alcohol hits harder. Two drinks on the first evening at 6,400 feet do more than two drinks at home. Halve it the first night.
This is not altitude sickness
Genuine acute mountain sickness is generally a concern above about 8,000 feet. Prescott is well below that and Groom Creek is too. Calling a first-night headache altitude sickness overstates it.
That said, the practical advice for the first day or two is the same as it is anywhere higher up, and it costs nothing: drink more water than usual, go easy on the alcohol, and do not schedule the hardest hike of the trip for the morning after you land.
Who should take it seriously
If you have a heart or lung condition, are on supplemental oxygen, or are pregnant, the elevation is worth a conversation with your doctor before you book, not a discussion in the car on the way up. The same applies to anyone who has reacted badly to elevation before.
Everybody else can treat it as a mild inconvenience on the first day.
Plan the first day accordingly
Arriving from Phoenix, you gain over 5,000 feet in about two hours of driving, which is fast. A sensible first afternoon is something flat: the Peavine Trail along Watson Lake, or the Lynx Lake loop, both of which are close to level.
Save Granite Mountain or the Groom Creek Loop for day two or three. The full range of options, easiest first, is in the best hikes around Prescott.
The same 1,000 feet that makes you breathe harder is what keeps Groom Creek four to five degrees cooler than town all year, which is the trade most people came for. That difference is set out in Prescott vs Phoenix temperatures.
Common questions
How high is Prescott, Arizona?
About 5,350 feet. The NOAA climate station sits at 5,354 feet. Groom Creek, seven miles south and up in the pines, is around 6,400 feet, roughly 1,000 feet higher again.
Can you get altitude sickness in Prescott?
Serious altitude sickness is uncommon below about 8,000 feet, so Prescott is well under the usual threshold. What people do notice at 5,350 to 6,400 feet is broken sleep the first night, getting winded faster than expected, dehydration, and alcohol hitting harder. That is not altitude sickness, but it is real.
Why does alcohol feel stronger in Prescott?
Less oxygen, drier air and faster fluid loss combine so that the same two drinks land harder than at sea level, particularly on your first evening. The usual advice is to halve what you would normally have on the first night and drink water alongside it.
How much water should you drink at Prescott elevation?
More than you think. The air is very dry and you lose water through breathing at a rate you do not notice. Aim well above your usual intake, especially on a hiking day, and treat a headache as a reason to drink before anything else.
Who should be careful at Prescott elevation?
Anyone with a heart or lung condition, anyone on supplemental oxygen, and people arriving from sea level who plan to hike hard on day one. If you have a relevant condition, talk to your doctor before the trip rather than after you arrive.
