All twelve months of Prescott weather, snow, events and crowds in one table, with the honest verdict on each. September and October win; June is the biggest escape from Phoenix.

Prescott is a genuine four-season town, which means there is no bad month, only months that suit different trips. Here is all twelve, with the numbers.

Temperatures and snowfall are NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the Prescott station. Groom Creek runs about 4 to 5°F cooler than these figures.
The verdict, by what you want
Best weather: May, September, October. May gives you the trails before the monsoon and before the crowds. September gives you an 82-degree afternoon while Phoenix is still at 100. October gives you 73 and gold cottonwoods. These three are the locals’ answer.
Biggest relief from the heat: June. Not July. June is when the overnight gap with Phoenix is widest at 25 degrees, and the monsoon has not yet raised the humidity in either place. More in the month-by-month Phoenix comparison.
Most to do: late June and December. Both are also the two hardest windows to book, which is not a coincidence.
Cheapest and quietest: January to March, midweek. Cold, short days, and a very different trip. Fireplace, hot tub, snow in the pines, nobody on the trails.
Fall colour: mid-October to early November at our elevation. The cottonwoods and oaks do the work; the ponderosas stay green. More in Prescott in the fall.
The events worth planning around
Prescott Bluegrass Festival, 20 and 21 June 2026. Two days of free live music on the Courthouse Plaza, 45th year.
World’s Oldest Rodeo, 29 June to 5 July 2026, running for its 139th year. The parade is Saturday 4 July. The town is full, the plaza is packed, and lodging across the whole area sells out. Book months ahead or come another week. See our summer events guide.
Christmas Parade and Courthouse Lighting, Saturday 5 December 2026. The parade at 1 p.m., the 72nd annual lighting at 5 p.m., fireworks after. This is the night Prescott earns the Christmas City name and it is genuinely worth seeing once.
Acker Night, Friday 11 December 2026. Downtown shops, galleries and restaurants turn into music venues for one evening. Locals rate it above the parade. More in winter in Prescott.

Two things people get wrong
“Arizona, so it will be warm.” Prescott’s average January low is 24°F and it freezes overnight from November through March. Pack for a mountain town, because that is what it is.
“Summer is the only time to come.” Summer is the busiest time, which is not the same thing. September has better weather than August, fewer people than June, and Phoenix is still at 100 degrees so the escape logic still holds.

What is the best month to visit Prescott, Arizona?
September and October. Highs of 82°F and 73°F, cold clear nights, the summer crowds gone, and the fall colour peaking from mid-October. May is the other answer if you want the trails without the monsoon.
What is the busiest time in Prescott?
Rodeo week at the end of June, and the whole of December. The World's Oldest Rodeo runs 29 June to 5 July in 2026 with the parade on 4 July, and Prescott trades as Arizona's Christmas City from the Courthouse Lighting on 5 December onwards. Lodging in both windows sells out months ahead.
Does it snow in Prescott?
Yes, about 10.2 inches a year across roughly five days with measurable snowfall. February is the snowiest month at 3.1 inches. Groom Creek, 1,300 feet higher, gets meaningfully more and holds it longer.
When is the monsoon in Prescott?
July and August, with afternoon thunderstorms that build over the Bradshaws, break hard for an hour and drop the temperature 15 degrees. They are dramatic rather than trip-ruining, but they do mean starting hikes early and being off exposed granite by early afternoon.
When is the cheapest time to visit Prescott?
January through March, outside holidays, and midweek. It is cold, the days are short and the lakes are not the draw, but the fireplace-and-hot-tub version of Prescott is a real trip and the rates are at their lowest.
