Getting to Prescott: Which Airport, and How Long the Drive Really Takes
Phoenix Sky Harbor, Prescott Regional and Flagstaff compared on drive time, flights and cost, plus the shuttle option and what the last 15 minutes to Groom Creek is like.

Nearly everyone who comes to Prescott flies into Phoenix and drives. Here is why, and what the alternatives actually cost you.

The Phoenix drive, honestly
It is about 105 miles and just under two hours: north on I-17, then west on Highway 69 at Cordes Junction. It is an easy drive on good road, and it climbs about 4,000 feet, which you notice in your ears rather than the steering.
Three things worth knowing:
- Friday afternoon out of the Valley adds 15 to 30 minutes. So does Sunday afternoon coming back, which is the worse of the two.
- The climb from Cordes Junction is where the temperature changes. You leave Phoenix at 108 and arrive at 88, and it happens in about 20 minutes of driving. More in the month-by-month comparison.
- Add 15 minutes to reach Groom Creek, south of town on Senator Highway.
There is a longer, prettier alternative up Highway 89 through Wickenburg and Yarnell, which adds about 40 minutes and a lot of switchbacks. Worth doing once, in daylight, not with a carload of tired people.
The shuttle, and when it makes sense
Groome Transportation runs between Sky Harbor and Prescott roughly hourly. The journey is about 2 hours 15 minutes and fares generally land in the $45 to $90 range, which beats a rental car plus fuel if you are travelling alone.
It makes sense if you are staying downtown and plan to stay downtown. It makes no sense if you are staying in a cabin, because everything you came for, the lakes, the trailheads, the drive up Senator Highway, needs a car. There is no useful public transport to the recreation areas.
Renting a car
Take one from Sky Harbor. Prices are lower and the choice is better than at PRC.
Do you need four-wheel drive? For most of the year, no. A front-wheel-drive car handles everything including the county dirt roads in Groom Creek. In February, the snowiest month, all-wheel drive is cheap insurance, mainly because of the steep private driveways rather than the roads themselves. The whole picture is in our winter driving guide.
Arriving at a cabin
Both of ours do self check-in from 4:00 PM, so a late arrival is fine and nobody is waiting up for you. Leave Phoenix by 2 p.m. and you will be in the hot tub by five.
The practical advice we give every guest: stop for groceries in Prescott before you drive up. There are no shops in Groom Creek, and realising that at 8 p.m. means a 30-minute round trip. Fry’s and Safeway are both on the way through town.

What is the closest airport to Prescott, Arizona?
Prescott Regional Airport, Ernest A. Love Field (PRC), about 15 minutes north of downtown. As of August 2026 United Express is the only carrier there, with two daily nonstops to Denver and one to Los Angeles. Almost every visitor flies into Phoenix Sky Harbor instead and drives up.
How long is the drive from Phoenix to Prescott?
About two hours for roughly 105 miles, north on I-17 then west on Highway 69. Add 15 to 30 minutes in Friday afternoon traffic leaving the Valley, and another 15 minutes if you are heading to Groom Creek south of town.

Phoenix, almost always. Sky Harbor is a two-hour drive with cheap flights and every rental company. Flagstaff Pulliam is closer in time, roughly 75 to 100 minutes, but has far fewer flights at higher fares. Only pick Flagstaff if the schedule happens to suit.
