Prescott's Five Lakes, Compared

Prescott has five lakes inside a 20-minute drive, and people routinely pick the wrong one. They are not interchangeable: 1,400 feet of elevation separates the highest from the lowest, and they suit completely different afternoons.

The one thing that surprises everyone

You cannot swim in any of them. Not Watson, not Willow, not Goldwater, not Lynx. They are reservoirs and managed recreation lakes, and swimming is prohibited at all of them.

This catches out a lot of families driving up from Phoenix expecting a lake day in the traditional sense. What you can do is paddle, fish, picnic and walk, all of which are excellent here. If somebody in your group is set on getting in the water, plan for that somewhere else.

The other surprise is a happy one: no gas motors anywhere. Every lake on this list is electric-motor only, which is why a Saturday on Lynx Lake sounds like birds instead of outboards.

Which one to pick

Watson Lake is the postcard. Orange granite boulders standing in still blue water, looking nothing like the rest of Arizona. Rent a kayak or bring your own, go early or at golden hour, and expect company at weekends. The Flume Trail loop scrambles around the shoreline if you would rather walk it. Willow Lake is Watson’s quieter twin, a mile north. Same Dells geology, more open shoreline, fewer people, better birds. The 5.4-mile loop is flat and exposed, so it is a cool-months walk.

Goldwater Lake is the family pick and the highest of the five at about 5,900 feet, which means real pine shade. Small, calm, with ramadas, a playground, a boat launch, docks, a sand volleyball court and horseshoe pits. It is ten minutes from Groom Creek, which makes it the default for our guests. Lynx Lake is the best walk. A flat 2.3-mile loop right around the water, shaded most of the way, with a café at the north shore and trout in the lake. There are two campgrounds here. More in the Lynx Lake guide.

Granite Basin Lake is the one nobody mentions. Small, sitting at the foot of Granite Mountain, a couple of picnic tables and a boat ramp. Not stocked, so the fishing is for patient people. Go for the setting.

Practical notes

• Pay at the kiosk. $5 a vehicle, cash or card. If you are here for several days, the city sells 10-visit, 40-visit and unlimited annual passes, all valid a year from purchase.
• Wednesdays are free at both the city lakes and the forest sites. If your trip is flexible, put the lake day on a Wednesday.
• Go early in summer. Monsoon storms build in the afternoon in July and August, and open water is the wrong place to be in lightning. See the monsoon guide.
• Winter still works. The lakes do not freeze over in any serious way and Watson in January with nobody on it is a good morning.
